As we get older, our skin starts to lose its elasticity and as a result, these dynamic wrinkles can lead to the formation of wrinkles and facial lines. What is involved in anti-wrinkle treatment?

Anti-wrinkle treatment involves small, quick and relatively painless injections into the affected area of skin and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells from reaching the muscles. As a result, the muscles don’t receive the instructions to contract. This leaves the skin looking smoother and younger.

Anti-wrinkle treatment can temporarily remove or reduce facial lines and wrinkles including forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet. When used correctly by a trained professional, anti-wrinkle treatment can give the face a natural, lifted look, considerably reducing the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles. It’s vital to visit a professional with training in providing safe and effective anti-wrinkle treatment.

Will anti-wrinkle treatment treatment be painful?

As with any injection, anti-wrinkle treatment can be slightly painful depending on the area that is injected, however, there is no downtime after treatment, so you can go back to work or resume your daily activities as normal.

What are the side effects?

The side effects of anti-wrinkle treatment are relatively minor and short lived. Some people experience a slight redness and bruising of the skin, and in some cases, there can be a small amount of swelling at the injection site.

How quickly will the effects be visible?

The rejuvenating effects of anti-wrinkle treatment can usually be seen within 5 to 7 days of treatment.

How long will the results of the treatment last?

The results of anti-wrinkle treatment vary depending on the patient, but in most cases, the effects last between 3 and 6 months.

Tooth Whitening - Laser Whitening vs. Home Whitening Kits

Tooth whitening is an ever more popular cosmetic dental treatment, used widely to improve the appearance of the teeth and give people a brighter, more confident smile. Tooth whitening is a simple, highly effective procedure involving bleaching of the teeth, in order to lighten them by up to several shades and create a whiter, healthier look. As tooth whitening has become more readily available and cost-effective, there are a few different whitening systems which can enhance the smile according to your expectations, budget and time requirements:

  • Cost: usually between £200 - £500 depending on the practitioner and system
  • Treatment time: under an hour to 4 weeks
  • Results: the effects will vary from person to person, depending on the type of tooth whitening treatment used. Heavily stained, yellow teeth or discoloured teeth may see more dramatic results than only slightly stained teeth.

In-practice, or laser whitening, and professional home whitening kits prescribed by a dentist, are the two main types of tooth whitening treatments currently available. They both use a procedure which applies a peroxide-based bleaching gel varying in concentration, onto the teeth to initiate the whitening process. Both treatments are safe and work without the need to remove any tooth structure.

Tooth whitening isn’t suitable for everyone, for instance if you have gum disease or other dental health problems or you’re pregnant. Teeth whitening will also not take effect on any crowns, fillings or veneers, so you’ll need to consult with your dentist to discuss the best options.

Laster Tooth Whitening

Laser tooth whitening can be carried out in as little as a 40 minute in-practice session by your dentist. Laser whitening uses photo cosmetic technology, whereby a bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and a laser light is used to activate it and restore teeth to a natural lighter shade. Laser whitening usually achieves more dramatic results than professional home kits and is much faster, as the concentration of peroxide is higher.

Before the teeth whitening process your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any tartar or surface stains. Once your existing shade has been recorded and protection has been placed around the gums, to avoid any potential damage from the peroxide, the whitening process can begin. You may feel sensitivity during the procedure, which will at most last for 48 hours after treatment, however if symptoms persist then you’ll need to contact your dentist.

With laser tooth whitening you can expect an instant bright smile of up to 10 shades lighter. Many dentists recommend following up the treatment with a professional home whitening kit, to prolong the results.

Professional Home Whitening

Home whitening kits are a less expensive tooth whitening treatment to lighten teeth and improve the smile. As they contain a lower concentration of peroxide, they are safe to use at home if prescribed by your dentist, however they will take a longer time to take effect. There are over the counter whitening kits available however these can be dangerous as they are not regulated as professional kits are – always carry out home tooth whitening under supervision of a registered dentist.

In your initial consultation your dentist will take an impression of your teeth, so that custom whitening trays can be made to exactly fit your teeth. After around 5-10 days your trays will be ready and you can use them in combination with a professional bleaching agent for the time period specified. Depending on the system you use, you may need to wear your whitening trays for just 1-2 hours a day, or longer overnight. Professional home whitening treatments usually take around 2-4 weeks for gradual, long-term results, which will leave you with a whiter and healthier looking smile.

What is Cosmetic Dentistry

It goes without saying that visiting the dentist regularly is vital for us to maintain the health of our teeth. However, we also visit the dentist for aesthetic reasons as we would like our teeth to look their best. In recent years, the tools, techniques and technologies at dentists’ disposal have developed considerably and so has the popularity of cosmetic dentistry – dental treatments that help us to keep our smile looking great and our confidence levels up!

Cosmetic dentistry includes a wide range of different treatments that are designed to improve our smiles. At Cathays Dental Clinic, our range of cosmetic dentistry treatments include:

Tooth Whitening

Over time, it’s normal for our teeth to become discoloured or stained, particularly by certain foods and drinks, habits like smoking and taking certain medications. Tooth whitening is a very popular and non-invasive procedure where the colour of the teeth can be lightened a few shades without the need to remove any tooth structure.

It’s always advisable to go to a dentist for tooth whitening treatment, as off the shelf tooth whitening packages can be ineffective or even dangerous. At Cathays Dental Clinic, we use revolutionary photo cosmetic technology to bleach the teeth to a whiter shade in just one session, applying gel to the teeth, before using a specialist whitening light to activate the gel.

We can also provide safe and effective home whitening kits to help whiten your smile.

Porcelain veneers are extremely thin shells that are custom made to cover the front side of the teeth. As well as helping to close gaps in the teeth, or align crowded, protruding teeth, veneers are also popular for lightening the colour of front teeth, giving you a whiter smile.

Porcelain Crowns

As well as restoring the shape and function of a tooth, crowns are also useful in covering discoloured, badly shaped teeth. Crowns, like veneers are made from porcelain and look very natural, providing a white smile.

Invisalign is an innovative and invisible way to achieve a straighter smile. Unlike traditional metal braces which can be uncomfortable and unsightly, Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners which can be removed to eat and clean your teeth. After an initial examination, we can write a treatment plan and take an impression of your teeth. Using the latest in 3D technology, impressions of your teeth and our instructions can be translated into a series of aligners, designed to gradually move your teeth over a period of time.

One of the biggest benefits of Invisalign clear aligners is that they are practically invisible, so you can straighten your smile with confidence, rather than drawing attention to your treatment. In addition to this, there is no need to worry about having problems brushing or flossing your teeth, or eating your favourite foods.

White Fillings

Fillings are placed to prevent the progression of decay or tooth damage caused by bacteria, restoring the tooth to its original size and function. In the past, silver fillings were widespread, whereas white fillings are now more common. Silver fillings can be replaced with white fillings to provide an improved cosmetic appearance.

Dental Implants

Dental implants provide the most natural looking substitute for lost teeth. Anchored directly into your jaw bone, titanium implants hold dentures firmly in place and look and feel natural. Missing teeth can often leave your face looking slightly sunken or sagging – by replacing the missing tooth, dental implants provide a solution for this problem.
